After twenty years at the helm of the Stimson Lane wine group (Chateau Ste. Michelle, Columbia Crest
and other wineries), Allen Shoup retired to pursue a personal dream. For years he had envisioned a joint
venture with highly acclaimed winemakers from different regions of the world. His goal was to bring
their expertise to Washington to create some of the most luxurious wines ever crafted from the region’s
fabled viniferous grapes. Wines that stand shoulder to shoulder with the world’s best.
“Build it and they will come.” Actively encouraged by his associates, including long time friend and
mentor, Robert G. Mondavi, Allen did just that. He invited several of the world’s most venturesome and
exciting vintners to the sunny slopes where the Snake River and the Yakima River flow into the mighty
Columbia. With their enthusiastic support and advice, Allen drew up plans to establish individual
wineries that would reflect the status and acclaim of each vintner. He named the venture “Long Shadow
Vintners,” in tribute to this select group of individuals, who shape the industry with their benchmark
wines and wineries.
His vision is now unfolding. Long Shadows winemaker-partners are designing world-class wines
comparable in stature to those they crafted in their native wine regions. They are touring the land,
running the soil through their fingers, surveying with practiced eye the leafy trellises that spill down the
hillsides of the Columbia Valley appellation. Like artists selecting paints for their palette and tints for
their canvas, they pick out the vineyards, and from those the clusters that will in time work magic under
their hands.
Some are working with the celebrated reds - Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah;
others with the treasured whites of the region - Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.
They construct wines in their own style, and with their own complexity, while striving to improve upon
their singular benchmarks. Beginning with the 2003 crush, they are crafting signature wines that carry
great promise for years to come.
A Coterie of Wineries
Long Shadows Vintners encompasses a coterie of wineries located in the heart of the Columbia Valley
appellation. The arrangement is unique in that each winery is individually owned and managed as a
separate partnership. Long Shadows Vintners, LLC, forms the nucleus of the group. The synergy and
knowledge flowing from this pool of combined talent is an organizational feature that benefits all vintner
partners.
A board of directors assumes responsibilities for strategic direction. Along with Allen as Chairman and
CEO, board members include such corporate and professional luminaries as Don Petersen, Admiral
Joseph Prueher, Anthony von Mandl, and Arnie Prentice. Everyday operations are managed by Allen in
concert with CFO and General Manager Mike Williamson.

Flying Trout Wines is a result of winemaker Ashley Trout's annual winemaking ventures in Mendoza, Argentina from February until May and in Walla Walla, Washington during the remainder of the year.
Our first, albeit small, vintage, was in 2004 when we produced the "Deep River Red" blend, comprised of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
A boutique winery, Flying Trout Wines is currently producing fewer than 1,000 cases a year. Most releases are fewer than 100 cases.
From sensuous Syrahs out of Walla Walla to classic Malbecs in Mendoza, Flying Trout Wines aims to bring you a little bit of the best of the world and nothing else.
This exclusive tour and tasting for up to 15 conference delegates, will begin at 2 PM, Friday July17th, 2009. Your hostess and guide will be Ashley Trout, owner and winemaker of these limited production, and fabulous boutique Walla Walla wines.

We named our winery Trio Vintners because we are three winemakers with similar backgrounds and goals, working together to craft premium wines from the region. We like that our name has so many positive connotations, beginning with the ‘three’ cornerstones of premium winemaking: exceptional fruit, a perfect climate and unique soil, all of which the Walla Walla Valley and Eastern Washington possess in abundance.
What brought us together was a shared vision for how we can lead our lives, taking a risk on the pursuit of passion and the intense desire to continue our educational experience. Each of us has transformed ourselves in a way, by returning to school at the Institute for Enology and Viticulture and studying winemaking in one of the world’s most exciting and emerging wine regions. We consider ourselves and our winemaking style to be a product of the region. We all contribute to the winemaking process, from sourcing grapes, processing, blending, bottling and finally marketing. However, each partner has unique strengths and skills, which helps get all the work done!
Region plays a significant role at Trio Vintners. The Eastern Washington landscape has a compelling geological story in the formation of the valley starting with the breath-taking Wallula Gap. In honor of the geographical significance of the Wallula Gap we decided to feature this landmark formation on our label. Wallula Gap is located on the Columbia River, close to where the Walla Walla River joins it, about 20 miles from Walla Walla. Over 12,000 years ago cataclysmic ice-age floods, originating from an ice damn breech in the Lake Missoula, inundated the region. The floodwaters backed up at Wallula Gap and formed temporary lakes in the Pasco Basin, Yakima and Walla Walla Valley. Sediments were laid down in these slack-water lakes, not once but many times over the course of hundreds of years. If not for Wallula Gap, the intensely rich, alluvial soils and sandy glacial sediment of the Columbia, Yakima and Walla Walla Valleys would not be present with the great variations we see today. We want to celebrate this ‘sense of place’ as it contributes so greatly to the geological history of the region and ultimately the quality of the wines we will make. We continue to marvel at the forces of nature that could bring such a place into being.

At Pepper Bridge, a family-owned estate winery, our mission is to make ultra-premium, world-class Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wines that showcase our Walla Walla Valley estate vineyards. These vineyards, Pepper Bridge Vineyard and Seven Hills Vineyard, are recognized as two of the best — not only in the appellation — but also in the state. In these vineyards, we practice sustainable viticulture, remaining committed to the long-term viability of the winemaking industry in the Walla Walla Valley.
Our wines have received widespread acclaim and have been recommended by tasters worldwide since our first vintage. Critics have used words such as “elegant,” “killer,” and “stylish” to describe our Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. We hope that you will visit us and find these descriptions appropriate, and perhaps you can share with us some adjectives of your own.
This excursion on Friday July 17th, 2009 at 2 PM will include a tour of the winemaking facilities with the winemaker and/or managing partner and a tasting of their available wines. This is an excellent opportunity to get inside this great property and experience the best Walla Walla has to offer.

Located at the base of the Blue Mountains in Walla Walla Washington, K Vintners opened its doors to the public on December 3rd, 2001. The property at 820 Mill Creek Road where the winery sits was homesteaded in 1853 with the adjacent farmhouse built in 1872. The winery grounds with Titus Creek flowing through the lawn and the old pioneer planted trees, is a little slice of heartland Americana.
The Winemaker:
He loves to drink wine! Charles Smith, proprietor and winemaker, comes to Walla Walla after 11 years in Scandanavia. Originally from northern California, he has been involved with wine personally and professionally his whole life. And did we forget to mention... he loves to drink wine!
The Vineyards:
K Vintners is producing wines from 2 distinctive viticultural zones: Wahluke Slope and Walla Walla Valley. Each of these areas are unique and awesome for Syrah and the Field Blends produced.
In April '02 two seperate blocks of vineyards were planted to Syrah adjacent to the winery in the rocky dry creek beds that run through K Vintners property.

Northstar, located in Walla Walla, Washington, aims to to make Merlots that can be considered among the world’s best, using fruit sourced from one of the world’s best regions for Merlot: Washington State.
Merlot is the best selling red grape variety in America. Merlot-based wines from Bordeaux’s Pomerol region are generally the most expensive and sought-after wines in the world. Blending New World fruit with an Old World winemaking style, influenced by Bordeaux’s “right bank,” Northstar creates Merlots that are among the most highly acclaimed in the world.

Woodward Canyon Winery, named for the canyon Rick’s family farmed and where the Estate Vineyard is now located, was established in 1981 by Rick Small and his wife, Darcey Fugman-Small. Woodward Canyon was the second winery in the Walla Walla Valley and the Smalls were instrumental in the process for obtaining federal approval of the Walla Walla Valley appellation. The winery has consistently produced premium, age-worthy, award-winning cabernet sauvignons and merlots as well as chardonnays. From the outset, Rick determined that quality would take precedence over quantity. Consequently, Woodward Canyon has remained small, increasing its production from 1,200 cases in 1981 to approximately 16,000 cases in 2008.
Rick planted the first of forty-one acres of the Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard in 1976 on his family’s dryland wheat ranch. The vineyard now includes cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and barbera, as well as several experimental varieties. The Estate Vineyard is Certified Sustainable by LIVE and is designated Salmon Safe. The winery also purchases grapes from selected growers and is a partner is Champoux Vineyard above the Columbia River in the Horse Heaven Hills. We have a strong belief that the quality of the wines is established in large part in the vineyards, therefore Rick spends a great deal of time supervising the vineyards.
In 1998, Woodward Canyon also began producing wines under its second label, Nelms Road. Nelms Road offers merlot and cabernet sauvignon from Walla Walla Valley and Washington State grapes. It was developed to produce delicious and affordable red wine from young vineyards or declassified Woodward Canyon Winery production. This declassification process assures that Woodward Canyon is always striving for higher quality.
Woodward Canyon is a founding member of the Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance and of Walla Walla Valley Vinea, the Winegrower’s Sustainable Trust.
Join Rick for a personal tour of the Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard and private tasting in the new Reserve Building.
Friday July 17th, 2:00 p.m. Ten spaces available.
